The story begins in Spain where Balenciaga opens its first boutique in San Sebastian, being first initiated by his mother. He moves to PARIS in 1937 because of Civil war torments in Spain. His success is very fast, as he had already gained a solid reputation in the wealthy Spanish society and in the French world of fashion. His style, the lines of his creations, its cuttings bring the designer to be known as "the fashion designer of the fashion designers", celebrated by Coco Chanel and Christian Dior. He will remain faithful to creations made with "haute couture" criteria and will never accept the concept and the process of "ready-to-wear". The company is bought by the groupe Jacques Bogart in 1986 then by Gucci in 2001, becoming then part of KERING as Gucci is integrated in 2003.

Artistic direction remains in Cristobal BALENCIAGA's hands until he retires in 1968. In 1950, André COURREGES joins the workshop as his assistant. Nicolas GHESQUIERE and Alexander WANG are the previous recent brand's designers.
