Belmond was born 40 years ago, when James B. SHERWOOD, the founder, acquired the Cipriani Hotel in Venice. The founder, an entrepreneur in the shipping industry was a frequent business traveller and decided to diversify his activities. A year later, the company started collecting cars from the Venice Simplon Orient Express, the mythical and unique train offering exclusive and luxury services, from London to Venice. This is why the company was named Orient Express Ltd and it’s only in 2004 that it’s been renamed Belmond. Over the years, Belmond acquires palaces and luxurious hotels located in exceptional sites, pursues its mission to offer high-end services in the hospitality, adding luxury river cruises, as well as several destinations on rails, by night or day, with trains all inspired by the Simplon Orient Express, such as Belmond Royal Scotsman et le Eastern & Oriental Express . In 2018, the high-end hotel specialist is acquired by LVMH. The group reinforce its presence in the luxury industry by developing its hospitality branch, which was already existing under the Cheval Blanc label.
