Iwan & Manuela Wirth, an iconical couple and major influencers in the art world, open their first space in Zurich in 1992, assisted by Manuela's mother, Ursula Hauser. Alexander Calder and Joan Miro are the first to be exhibited. The couple would say that "Louise Bourgeois, Dan Graham, Mary Heilmann, Richard Jackson, Paul McCarthy, Jason Rhoades, Pipilotti Rist, Roman Signer, Diana Thater are the founding members of the gallery". More than an international gallery devoted to contemporary and modern art, the Wirth develop projects and ideas such as Somerset, based in the country side of England in Burton, which is a gallery in and out, and a laboratory around art with seminars, workshops, guest house, a vegetable garden for the restaurant.
