Both in Cologne, while Monika Sprüth opens her first gallery in 1983, Philomene Magers opens her space in 1991. The 1st one is specialised in conceptualism, promoting new talents, and is focused on women work. The second one is supporting artists of post war bringing non German artists to her gallery. Feeling complementary, they decide to merge in 1998, SPRÜTH MAGERS was born. The gallery promotes mid career artists as well as supports younger artists.
