Van Cleef and Arpels was born from the love story between Estelle Arpels, daughter of a gem dealer, and Alfred Van Cleef, the son of a gemstone maker. The second teamed up with his father-in-law and they opened their first boutique in 1906 on the prestigious Place Vendôme in Paris. Quickly, jewellers know a strong notoriety, adapting to the demand of a demanding clientele. Among them, Grace Kelly, Barbara Hutton, The Duchess of Windsor or the Indian Maharajas will pass the Place Vendôme or the many shops open in strategic seaside towns. The house created, over time, unique pieces, inspired by cultures around the world, travel, nature, tales and legends. The Richemont group becomes the owner of the company in 1999. The maison is a member of the Comité Colbert.
